The Taiwan United Nations Alliance (TAIUNA) announced on Monday plans to send a delegation to New York and Washington, D.C. during the UN General Assembly to advocate for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN.
The delegation aims to request hearings on Taiwan’s international status from the UN Secretariat and the U.S. Congress. This move follows an open letter sent by TAIUNA President Lin Yet-min (林逸民) to UN Secretary-General António Guterres urging a review of UN Resolution 2758 and support for Taiwan’s bid to become a formal UN member state.
TAIUNA Honorary Chairman Michael Tsai (蔡明憲) said that the delegation hopes to express Taiwan’s desire to join the UN through voices from within the country, the Legislature, the U.S. Congress, and at the UN public hearings.
The 79th UN General Assembly will convene in New York on Tuesday, with general debates running from September 24 to 28 and on September 30. The TAIUNA delegation will be in the U.S. from September 12 to 30 and will hold a series of events to address the misinterpretation on Taiwan’s status in UN Resolution 2758. Events include an international press conference, a major parade, and the "Taiwan’s Democracy and Its International Representation” forum with the Hudson Institute and the Washington Times. The forum will feature prominent figures such as former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Hudson Institute President and CEO John P. Walters, and Washington Times Chairman Tom McDevitt.
