US National Security Advisor has been steadfast in stance on Taiwan throughout meetings with China: Foreign Ministry

The Foreign Ministry commented on United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (王毅) this Thursday. They confirmed that high-level US officials have repeatedly expressed their firm stance on maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait throughout interactions with Chinese officials.

The Ministry condemned the press release issued by China on Sullivan and Yi’s meeting earlier this week, which they say contained fallacies about the relationship between Taiwan and China. They reiterated that the two countries are not affiliated and that China continues to intimidate and suppress Taiwan, in addition to attempting to expand its influence in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

According to a report published by the Financial Times on Monday, Sullivan and Yi have held a series of secret meetings since May 2023, shortly after the US shot down a Chinese high-altitude balloon that had flown across North America and US-China relations dipped to a new low. Although these meetings have not resolved key points of contention, Sullivan stated that they have helped to stabilize the dynamic between the two countries.

The Foreign Ministry stated that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and work with like-minded countries such as the US to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
