President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) ancestral home in New Taipei’s Wanli District will open to the public in October. The house has been transformed into a museum and, as President Lai marks 100 days in office on Tuesday, the public can begin booking guided tours.
The President’s property garnered attention during his election campaign over illegal construction claims. President Lai responded by promising to dedicate the house for public use. The property is located in an old coal mining area and has now been turned into a museum memorializing the lives of coal miners.
The museum largely preserves the original state of the home where Lai and his mother once lived. The first floor features a photography exhibit contributed by Houtong Miner's Culture and History Museum founder Chou Chao-nan (周朝南).
The museum is managed by local community organizations and regular guided tours will be run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting in October. Two guided sessions will be offered each day, in the morning and afternoon.
