The Culture Ministry has selected Old Fox as Taiwan’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The Ministry issued a press release this Wednesday explaining their selection.
Of the 14 domestic films submitted for the Oscars this year, the Culture Ministry says Hsiao Ya-chuan’s (蕭雅全) Old Fox was selected for the profound way it highlights humanity through its descriptive and narrative focus on social and economic changes that took place in Taiwan during the late 1980s.
Old Fox received awards for the best director, design, original film score, and supporting actor at the 2023 Golden Horse Awards. The film has additionally been invited to screen at nearly a dozen international film festivals, including the Hong Kong International Film Festival, Busan International Kids and Youth Film Festival, San Diego Asian Film Festival, and more.
The Culture Ministry says it hopes the film can stand out among the other renowned international submissions and win the Best International Feature Film for Taiwan at the upcoming Oscars, which will take place in March 2025.
