The Education Ministry kicked off the 2024 Digital Learning International Forum Tuesday. The forum, which lasts through Wednesday, invites foreign and domestic experts, scholars, and teachers to discuss the application of generative AI in different fields, the trend of bilingual digital education, and more.
Deputy Minister of Education Benson Yeh (葉丙成) attended the forum and gave a speech in which he first thanked the expert voices in attendance for coming to promote digital education. He also took the opportunity to reveal the Education Ministry’s plans to establish a variety of AI education programs in universities.
To address the fact that many schools lack teachers on the subject, the ministry will promote the establishment of an “AI University Alliance” that will assist in the development of courses to be offered at the college level. Ideally, the program would help to cultivate a deeper understanding and capability to use AI among students.
There are ongoing plans to establish similar programs for all levels of education. In high school, more AI-focused elective courses will be offered. To promote AI education for primary and secondary levels, AI-based competitions will be organized. Yeh said that unlike traditional AI contests that typically focus on generative AI, the focus of these competitions would be on building and implementing AI learning models. Students would learn how to build their own model, use the model to control characters in computer games, and compete using these model-driven characters. Therefore, better built models would have an edge in the competition.
