The U.S. and the Philippines held a 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in Manila on Tuesday, reaffirming that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are crucial for global security and prosperity. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Thursday that it welcomes international support for shared values of democracy and the rule of law in the Indo-Pacific region.
Over the past month, China has reiterated its “One China” principle on various bilateral and multilateral occasions. However, the international community, led by the U.S., has been equally active in emphasizing the importance of the Taiwan Strait. Discussions related to the Taiwan Strait have been particularly prominent in several high-level meetings, including the US-Japan-South Korea defense chiefs' conference and the U.S. Secretary of State Blinken's meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (王毅).
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry says democratic nations are concerned about China’s provocative actions in the region, stressing that peace in the Taiwan Strait is vital for global security and prosperity.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) emphasized that maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait is essential for a free and open Indo-Pacific region. He noted that Taiwan reaffirms its commitment to deepening cooperation with like-minded nations and defending shared values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law in the region.
