The 2024 Paris Olympics will kick off on Friday, with Taiwan sending 60 athletes to compete in 16 sports. Among the top medal contenders is gymnast Tang Chia-hung (唐嘉鴻), nicknamed “King of Cat” who is a favorite in the horizontal bar after a remarkable comeback from an Achilles tendon rupture, earning a career-high score at the World Cup Challenge in June.
Judo athlete Yang Yung-wei (楊勇緯), competing in the men's 60kg category, aims for gold after winning silver in Tokyo 2021. Entering as the world's top-ranked judoka, he faces tough competitors like Japan's Ryuju Nagayama and Georgia's Lukhumi Chkhvimiani.
Badminton star Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎), aims to overcome injuries and secure a medal in her final Olympics. Reigning Olympic badminton champions Lee Yang (李洋) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟), despite recent inconsistencies, could still surprise fans.
In tennis, Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) teams up with 20-year-old Tsao Chia-yi (曹家宜), with high hopes for Taiwan's first Olympic tennis medal. Table tennis player Lin Yun-ju (林昀儒), who won a mixed doubles silver in Tokyo, is expected to bring home a medal while competing in multiple events.
Taiwan's boxing team, featuring six athletes with impressive international results, has strong medal prospects. Archery, a consistent medal-winning sport for Taiwan, aims for another podium finish.
Weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) faces challenges due to injuries but remains determined to win a medal. Chen Wen-huei (陳玟卉), a bronze medalist in Tokyo, now competes in the 71kg category and is a hopeful contender.
The only new sport added to the Olympics this year is Breaking, and Taiwan's breakdancer Sun Chen (孫振) is aiming for a historic performance. Canoeists Lai Kuan-chieh (賴冠傑) and Wu Shao-hsuan (吳少璿) also make their Olympic debuts, marking a new chapter for Taiwan in these sports.
