WATCH: Astronomical tide causes flooding in Southern Taiwan

Affected by the annual astronomical tide, flooding occurred again early this morning in the Cijin District of Kaohsiung.

Video script:

Seawater surged into the streets, forcing pedestrians and motorcyclists to wade through the water. Nearby residents are troubled, as the area floods every time there is a high tide, and they hope for improvements soon. Similarly, in Donggang Township's Dongjin Village in Pingtung, flooding also occurs at the low-lying terrain. Although the water has receded, the Central Weather Administration reminds residents of the coastal areas in the southwest to be on high alert for high tides until the 24th.

Motorcyclists riding on the road stir up small waves, and pedestrians have to wade through the water. But how can this happen when it hasn’t rained?

Even near the pier, you can’t tell the difference between the coastline and the road. It turns out that seawater has backflow into the streets.

When asked by the reporter if they are frustrated with the situation, a local resident says "it is what it is but it’s not as bad as the previous years.”

Another resident also told the reporter that he also thought it wasn’t as bad as last year, when the water actually flooded into their home.

On Monday morning in Cijin, Kaohsiung, shortly after 7 AM, the astronomical high tide hit, causing the sea level to rise. This led to flooding in several low-lying areas of Cijin. Although the water depth only covered adults' feet, the problem of seawater backflow troubles residents every year from June to August. A similar situation also occurs in Donggang, Pingtung County.

The flooding gradually receded by 8:30 AM. However, the Central Weather Administration reminds residents in the southwestern coastal areas that the annual high tide will continue to occur until Wednesday. Additionally, with Typhoon Gaemi approaching, this might bring heavy rainfall. Residents in low-lying areas must remain highly vigilant and take precautions to prevent flooding.
