Southeast Asian nationals could take home NT$10,000 (US$306) for sharing a one-minute video about their life in Taiwan.
As of May 2024, over 776,000 migrant workers, 597,000 foreign spouses, and 116,000 foreign students call Taiwan home. In total, it’s estimated that over 1.49 million foreigners are residents in Taiwan, most of which are from Southeast Asian countries.
The Kaohsiung Museum of Labor is holding its first ever short video contest, welcoming Southeast Asian residents 18 years and older across Taiwan to send in videos centered around one thing they want Taiwanese people to know.
Kaohsiung Museum of Labor Section Chief Li Ying-hsuan (李映萱) says the video contest is being held to enhance cultural exchanges and understanding between Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Li says the algorithms that run our social media platforms often put up barriers that isolate communities, and it is the museum’s hope that short videos enlightening the public about Southeast Asian culture and people will break through such barriers.
Registration forms are available in Tagalog, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai on the museum’s website. Participants can create their videos in these four Southeast Asian languages, and three winning works will be selected from within each. Creativity counts for 40% of the score, so Li suggests branching away from typical themes such as those centered around food.
Winners will receive a NT$10,000 (US$306) gift certificate and be invited to the museum’s Southeast Asian Culture Day celebration later this year. Contest registration is open until July 31.
