Blending tradition and technology, Wude Temple in Yunlin has introduced an AI-powered fortune-telling system that translates a centuries-old experience into a modern and accessible format.
Visitors can now scan QR codes with their smartphones and obtain a translation of their fortune into plain language. This innovative technology has reduced the time needed to decipher these otherwise cryptic messages from about 20 minutes to just 30 seconds.
Temple Secretary-General Su Chien-hua (蘇建華) showcased the simplicity of the new system, which has been positively received by temple-goers. One devotee mentioned that communicating with temple staff can be stressful, especially when discussing personal matters. However, with AI interpretation, individuals can easily grasp the meaning on their own, leading to a clearer understanding.
Another visitor praised its convenience, saying not only is it easier to interpret, but it can eliminate the need to wait in line if there are a lot of people.
However, the temple's fortune-telling masters emphasize that the AI system is primarily a simplification tool for specialized fortune-telling language. One master emphasized that what matters most is whether the person truly understands the deity's intention.
Temple officials stress that the AI system is meant to assist in interpreting fortunes, not to replace the human touch entirely. It aims to reduce the workload of explaining archaic language while allowing devotees to study the meaning of their fortune at their own pace, even after leaving the temple.
