A visit to the Criminal Investigation Bureau this Wednesday gives Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) and other officials an update on the latest criminal crackdown. Cho says two national anti-crime projects are currently underway, and that the government wants the public to know it is determined to comprehensively crack down on fraud, gangs, corruption, and drugs.
Police agencies report shutting down close to 470 cases of fraud from more than 2,500 suspects. The court also reports detaining 235 suspects and seizing over NT$749 million (US$23 million) in illegal profits.
Cho says this is only the beginning of the confrontation with crime and that efforts will be ongoing. He says the government will never stop fighting to eradicate corruption and drugs, adding that Taiwan is not the place for gangsters and criminals to run rampant.
Cho says he expects the police force will continue showing concrete results and safeguarding the rights of law-abiding individuals. He expressed the hope that the Legislature will pass the four anti-fraud laws as soon as possible to equip the police force with the necessary tools to combat fraud and protect the public.
