A guest columnist on China risk published a Barron’s article on Monday regarding the potential geopolitical repercussions of the upcoming U.S. presidential election.
In his commentary titled “ A Chaotic U.S. Election Would Hand China an Opportunity”, CEO of Strategy Risks Isaac Stone Fish speculates that if the election results lead to a power vacuum or significant unrest, authoritarian regimes such as China and Russia could exploit the situation to their advantage.
According to Fish, if the results are fiercely disputed, this could create instability. Fish suggests that amidst such turmoil, Beijing might view the situation as an opportune moment to escalate tensions over Taiwan. He argues that, regardless of the election outcome, the U.S. may be unwilling or unable to intervene effectively in a Taiwan crisis due to a potential lack of congressional support and public consensus. He warns that such actions would not only reshape regional dynamics but would also pose significant challenges to international stability.
Fish underscores the importance of preparedness among global stakeholders, urging businesses and investors to consider contingency plans in the face of escalating geopolitical risks.
