The United States’ annual National Independence Day Parade was held in Washington D.C. on Thursday, marking the 248th birthday of the nation. Amongst the bands, floats, and military groups that marched along Constitution Avenue in 34 C (93 F) weather was a group of Taiwanese Americans, complete with the Third Crown Prince (三太子), a Formosan black bear, and a sign reading “Taiwanese Americans.”

Taiwanese American DC Area (TADCA) organized the parade attraction, stating that they have participated in the parade for over 20 years since their first opportunity in 2002. TADCA representative Dr. Ming Hong Chow (周明宏) stated that there was significant interest and plenty of sign-ups to participate. He emphasized the various Taiwanese elements they incorporate into each year’s performance, including aboriginal dances, religious symbols, and endemic animal mascots.

Chow shared that after living in the U.S. for many years, he’s noticed a difference in the public’s recognition of Taiwan. He says he believes this is due to Taiwan being a democratic and free nation as well as its scientific and technological achievements.

This year is Harvey Roberts’ third year as the Third Crown Prince. Roberts shared his experience, stating that beyond his connection with Taiwan, he wanted to participate because he believes global democracy and freedom of speech are under threat and wanted to show that we all need freedom of speech and expression and democracy.
