With the ringing bells and personnel waving flags, anticipation grew as the train was about to arrive. The shiny white locomotive with a deep blue body was welcomed with much fanfare. The Taiwan Railway Corporation’s (TRC) newly acquired European-style R200 diesel-electric locomotive was followed by armed vehicles and large containers.

After a year of rigorous testing and adjustments, the R200 made its inaugural journey in Hualien on Thursday, thrilling railway enthusiasts who eagerly captured the moment on their phones.

Visitors claimed that the new train was much prettier and quieter than its predecessors.

The R200 model features enhanced safety measures and aesthetic upgrades, an impressive 2700 horsepower engine, reduced emissions, and improved performance. TRC Chairperson Tu Wei (杜微) highlighted its protective cameras for enhanced security and systems for fire prevention and noise reduction. Despite being designed for freight transport, the train attracted early-morning enthusiasts eager to witness its debut and collect commemorative items.

With 34 R200 locomotives to be deployed, TRC plans to use them not only for freight, but also for disaster relief and military transport. They are expected to play a crucial role on the mainline between Hualien and Changhua Mechanical Engineering Depot.

After one year of testing, it seems the TRA is back on-track to impress both enthusiasts and operators alike.
