The U.S. Library of Congress on Tuesday released its list of 25 films to be included in the National Film Registry Listing for 2023. The list includes films such as "Home Alone", "Terminator 2", and "Apollo 13". Among the list was the film "The Wedding Banquet," directed by Taiwanese director Ang Lee (李安).
The National Film Registry is a list of movies designated by the National Film Preservation Board (NFPB) to be kept in the Library of Congress. Since its establishment in 1988, the NFPB of the United States selects 25 films each year that are considered to have made important historical, cultural, and aesthetic contributions.
Ang Lee is an Oscar-winning director. The 1993 romantic comedy "The Wedding Banquet" is his second film, and was a Taiwan-U.S. co-production. The film tells the story of a Taiwanese gay man living in New York who has not yet come out to his parents. He attempts to appease them by marrying a woman from Shanghai who is in need of a green card. According to the Library of Congress, Lee has stated that this film still reminds him of his passion for making movies when he was young.
