On January 13, Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) candidate Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) will be the first candidate listed on the official voting ballot for Taiwan’s 2024 presidential election. The ballot order, announced on Monday, was decided through a lottery process overseen by the Central Election Commission. Following Ke’s name will be Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Lai Ching-te (賴清德), followed by Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) in the third spot.
Many people showed up outside the Central Election Commission to support their favored candidates. During the official draw, candidate’s and their representatives drew in the order of their candidate’s registration date. Since Lai was the first to register, DPP vice presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) drew first, pulling out the number “2”. She was followed by Ko, who drew first place while KMT spokesperson Lee Li-chen (李利貞), representing Hou, drew the final lot. Following the results, supporters present shouted slogans reflecting the numbers drawn by their candidate.
