The Environment Ministry’s Climate Change Administration Director-General Tsai Lin-yi (蔡玲儀) said on Tuesday that although Taiwan has not been allowed to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, the ministry is paying close attention to the meetings. The summit will run until December 12 and Tsai says the ministry’s plans to send personnel to Dubai to attend peripheral meetings will be finalized in the coming days.

Tsai says that more than 100 countries led by the European Union have proposed a threefold increase in renewable energy installations by 2030 compared to 2020 levels. She says that this shows a trend in favor of expanding renewable energy and this aligns closely with Taiwan's net-zero pathway. Tsai says Taiwan has thoroughly assessed strategies for energy transition and that if proposed initiatives are in line with Taiwan’s path, it will support and promote them.

In response to the recent pledges of financial assistance from the United States, the European Union, and others to aid vulnerable nations impacted by climate change, Tsai highlighted Taiwan's commitment to supporting developing countries affected by climate impacts. She cited ongoing discussions within the Foreign Ministry to establish a joint fund with four Pacific allied nations to combat climate change, with details and funding still under consideration since the discussions began in July of this year.
