U.S. Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council Kurt Campbell says that U.S. President Joe Biden told Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) to respect Taiwan’s presidential elections during a recent meeting between the two leaders.
Campbell made the comments while speaking to Taiwanese media in San Francisco on Thursday local time.
Campbell says Biden also reiterated to Xi that the U.S. policy on Taiwan remains unchanged and that the U.S. will take necessary measures to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Kurt Campbell was recently nominated to be Biden’s deputy secretary of state, though his position has not yet been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
