The current global decline of democracy makes Taiwan's progress even more important. That’s according to Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) during a press conference in the Legislature on Tuesday announcing the release of a book series detailing the history of Taiwanese democracy.
You says that according to the 2023 Global Freedom Report released by Freedom House in the United States, overall global freedom has regressed for 17 consecutive years. He cited events like Hong Kong's extradition issues, the new regime in Afghanistan, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the value of Taiwan's continuous democratic progress amid global setbacks.
You also pointed out that in the past, Taiwan was forced to familiarize itself with Chinese history and that the country’s democracy today has been built on the sacrifices of many people. He says that Taiwan’s democratic progress is extremely valuable and he hopes to attract people’s interest and encourage more people to study Taiwan's history.
