These are the heroes who don’t wear capes. An emergency physician from Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital helped in Gaza’s hospital after the outbreak of the conflict.

Doctor Hung Shang-kai (洪上凱) who joined “Doctors Without Borders” to provide humanitarian healthcare on the frontlines, has safely returned to Taiwan and shares his experiences from working in Gaza.
He recalls the birth of a premature baby born before the war broke out, saying that due to the war, the mother had to give up her bed to someone in greater need and was forced to evacuate early. He says when she was preparing to leave and return home, she received news that her home had been bombed.
Dr. Hung went to Gaza before the war erupted. He spent half an hour commuting every day to help establish an emergency injury diagnosis system and optimize treatment processes. After October 7, the day the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted, Dr. Hung faced life-and-death moments and due to the air raid being too close to the area, was forced to move continuously.
He says that during this time he saw the value of emergency room physicians. He expressed the hope the events happening in Gaza and the need for medical assistance would receive greater societal recognition. Dr. Hung plans to return to Gaza to contribute with humanitarian help as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues.
