Tainan City was included in National Geographic Traveller magazine’s ‘Cool List 2024’ published on October 31. The travel magazine’s list enumerates the top 30 places to visit next year and not only includes locations with scenic landscapes but also those offering unique experiences and cuisine.
According to the magazine, Tainan will be celebrating its 400th anniversary next year. It says that Tainan’s history features a confluence of Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Dutch influences, offering a unique blend of cultures to visitors.
Well known for its street food, the magazine says must-try Tainan dishes include danzai soup noodles and ‘coffin bread’, a hollowed-out piece of thick toast filled with creamy chowder or stew. Those looking for an adrenaline rush can also participate in the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival where hundreds of thousands of firecrackers are ignited at the same time aimed at onlookers. This creates a cacophonous bee-like sound as the fireworks “baptize” locals and visitors alike.
