Government to expand rental subsidies to cover campus dormitories: Premier Chen Chien-jen

The government is set to expand rental subsidies to include fees for on-campus dormitories starting next year. That’s according to Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) who gave an interview at the Legislature on Tuesday.

University and college students who are 18 years old and above can apply for the rental subsidy which will be made available in February next year at the earliest. The subsidy will provide at the most NT$1,500 (US$47) per month for students staying at on-campus dormitories.

Chen says that students renting accommodation off-campus already receive rental subsidies, so now the government wants to extend the assistance to young people who pay for on-campus housing. He says the aim is to lessen the financial burden of the younger generation, allowing them to work harder towards their futures. Chen added that the goal is to provide the best support for students, whether they live on or off campus.
