National Security Bureau (NSB) Director-General Tsai Ming-yen (蔡明彥) reiterated the government’s principle of respect regarding Chinese spouses at the Legislative Yuan on Monday.

During an interview, Tsai firmly stated the government’s position of respecting the lawful activities of Chinese spouses in Taiwan. However, should cooperation with China on unification activities or other actions implemented in Taiwan per Chinese Communist Party directives be discovered, the NSB will collect evidence and send these to judicial authorities for further investigation. He explains that this is the basic process of handling issues with Chinese spouses.

Activities of Chinese spouses in Taiwan have been in the news recently due to speculations that China-born Hsu Chun-ying (徐春鶯), wife of a Taiwan national, may run for a legislative seat in the upcoming 2024 elections. There have been concerns regarding the legitimacy of her candidacy and questions on her loyalty to Taiwan. Hsu received her Taiwan National ID in 2000 and holds a Taiwan passport which is proof of her Taiwanese nationality.
