The Defense Ministry on Thursday said a United States destroyer and a Canadian frigate were detected at the southern end of the Taiwan Strait the previous night. The announcement was made in a post on the ministry’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, which added that the ships were moving in a northward direction.
The U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet also released a statement on Thursday that the U.S. Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta and the Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Ottawa ships had conducted a routine transit through the Taiwan Strait on November 1. The statement adds that the bilateral transit demonstrates the U.S. commitment to its allies and partners, and to operate wherever international law allows.
