Taiwanese Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) expressed confidence in the U.S. security commitment to Taiwan at a Legislature meeting on Friday in response to comments made by American Institue in Taiwan (AIT) Chair Laura Rosenberger.
Rosenberger visited Taiwan earlier this month and said that the United States opposes any unilateral changes to the status quo, including Taiwan's independence.
Chen says that U.S.-Taiwan relations are currently at their best, and the U.S. has provided a lot of support to strengthen the country’s national defense. He reiterates that Taiwan will not do anything that could harm the status quo, though he added that it will continue to work with like-minded countries to defend peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
On the issue of whether or not data from Taiwan's Indigenous Defense Submarine program has been leaked, Chen says that the investigation is ongoing and that it is important to trust the judicial process. He also emphasizes that he believes the ruling party and opposition parties are committed to national security and are working hard to protect the country's secrets and key facilities.
