The number of migratory black-faced spoonbill birds in the Tainan coastal area has reached more than 1500 according to a survey conducted by the Tainan Ecological Conservation Association on Wednesday. The birds’ yearly migratory season begins around the beginning of October.

Chiu Jen-wu (邱仁武) of the Tainan Ecological Conservation Association says that Tainan consistently hosts over 60% of the black-faced spoonbill population during winter migration. Chiu says the total population has exceeded 2,000 for eight consecutive years.

The survey revealed the population of the black-faced spoonbills has increased by more than 1,100 in the past two weeks. The birds are primarily concentrated in key habitats, including the Black-faced Spoonbill Refuge near the mouth of the Zengwen River, the Qigu Dingshan Birdwatching Pavilion, and the Xuejia Wetland Ecological Park, among others.

Tainan’s 2023 black-faced spoonbill conservation season will start on Saturday, featuring various activities like bird-watching tours, sanctuary visits, and family-friendly outings.
