Following the report of the National Security Bureau to the cabinet on Taiwanese nationals being detained in China, the disappearance of a Chinese spouse married to a Taiwanese citizen has been reported by local media.
The spouse recently went to China to visit relatives and has not been heard from since. It is suspected that she is being detained due to her attendance at an event organized by an association known to be supportive of President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文).
The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) said on Thursday that they received information from a third party about the disappearance. The SEF added that though the family has not contacted them on the matter, it will continue to monitor the situation.
Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) reminds nationals to remain vigilant of their safety when visiting China. He also says to contact the relevant government agencies should assistance be needed.
