As Typhoon Koinu passed by Taiwan on Thursday, it also hit Taiwan’s outlying Orchid Island, damaging people’s homes and destroying critical infrastructure.

Typhoon Koinu’s strong winds thrashed Orchid Island off the southeast coast of Taiwan on Thursday with record-high wind speeds, ripping apart doors and shattering glass.
While the Hengchun Peninsula in southern Taiwan received the most rainfall, places such as Orchid Island have also been hit hard.
One island resident shared video showing how the winds left his living room in tatters. The footage also shows metal roofing blown off of homes, damaging cars below.
Typhoon winds were strong enough to damage electric power poles and overturn cars.
Another resident says Typhoon Koinu damaged and tipped over boats in the harbor. He also says pumps at gasoline stations have been blown away, and some homes with metal roofing have been demolished.
Some locals are even saying the storm is the worst they have ever experienced.
