As Typhoon Koinu approaches, more flooding could be on the horizon for coastal areas in Kaohsiung, particularly Cijin District and other low-lying regions. The areas experienced severe flooding for several days in August due to the high tide caused by the supermoon.
Koinu is expected to impact Kaohsiung most significantly between Wednesday and Friday, with rainfall accumulation possibly reaching up to 200 millimeters in lowland areas and up to 400 millimeters in mountainous regions. The Central Weather Administration has also issued a tidal surge warning from Tuesday to Thursday.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-Mai (陳其邁) visited pumping stations to inspect the readiness of the facilities. He said they are strengthening pumping efforts, especially with mobile pumps, in hopes of minimizing the impact of the tidal surge.
Taiwan Power Company is also preparing for potential flooding to avoid power outages. Taipower is making sure that all equipment is functioning properly and repair operations can be promptly conducted if needed. Personnel and vehicles are also on standby, bracing for the approaching Typhoon Koinu.
