Radio Taiwan International (Rti) held its 2023 Taiwan Forum in Bangkok on Friday. The forum brought together an international group of experts on topics such as disinformation and cognitive warfare to discuss how these issues affect the modern media landscape and how media professionals can combat them.
Rti Chairperson Cheryl Lai (賴秀如) gave opening remarks at the forum. Lai says that the world has faced numerous significant challenges in recent years. While the global pandemic has ended, Lai says the difficulties posed by fake news and information warfare continue without end. She adds that democracies need to come together to combat disinformation and share the burden of improving media ecosystem resilience.
Deputy Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand Hsu Wei-ming (徐蔚民), along with Move Forward Party legislator Chaiwat Sathawornwichit and over 70 representatives from Thai and Southeast Asian media organizations participated in the event to discuss how media professionals and the public can identify disinformation.
Lai thanked the organizations that partnered with Rti in holding the event including the International Broadcasting Association (AIB), the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), and the Asia Centre in Thailand. Lai says she hopes all attendees can share their experiences and work together to combat information warfare tactics.
