The Foreign Ministry said on Thursday it will donate US$1 million to Libya after Hurricane Daniel brought devastating flooding that has killed thousands in the North African country. The ministry says the donation will be made to the Libyan government through appropriate means to assist the victims, as well as recovery and reconstruction work.
Northeastern Libya was hit by Hurricane Daniel earlier this week, which dropped record rainfall in mountainous areas causing two dams to break and catastrophic flooding in the coastal city of Derna. At least 11,300 people have been killed.
Taiwan and Libya currently lack official diplomatic relations and do not maintain representative offices in each other's countries. However, the ministry says that as soon as the Libyan floods occurred, it instructed Taiwan’s representative office in Jordan to express its condolences and its willingness to provide assistance. The ministry says it hopes that victims can rebuild their homes and return to normal life as soon as possible.
