Premiere Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) said the government currently does not have any plans of demolishing the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall on Monday. This was in response to an op-ed on the Liberty Times commenting on the advancement of the government’s policy to achieve transitional justice.
Chen pointed out that the main purpose of transitional justice is to dismantle authoritarian symbols and discourage glorification of authoritarian figures in the democratic era. He emphasized that the government has completed a plan for the implementation of the memorial hall transformation and that there are no plans to demolish it. Chen also stated that the government will continue to collect opinions from the public for review.
The Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) said that the transformation of the memorial hall requires thoughtful discussions on the purposes for the re-organization and space transformation. Cheng said the Cabinet has organized a special committee which regularly convenes government officials and specialists regarding the transformation process. He said the government will announce any further progress on the matter.
