Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain has joined forces with the Filmoteca de Catalunya (Catalonia film archive) in Spain to exhibit four Taiwanese films by Edward Yang. This unique cinematic event is scheduled to run from September 12 to 24 and will feature a selection of his iconic films.
Mr. Chang Yu-hsuan (張祐瑄), head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain, expressed that this collaboration was inspired by the overwhelming reception of Edward Yang's film Yi Yi when it was screened in Spain back in 2001. Despite this success, many of Yang's other works remained unseen by the local audience. The film exhibition will feature screenings Edward Yang's most representative works: A Brighter Summer Day, Terrorizers, Yi Yi, and A Confucian Confusion.
In addition to the screenings, the exhibition will also include informative film seminars on September 12 and 13 with special speakers. These will be aimed at increasing awareness of Taiwanese cinema among professionals and the general public within the Spanish film industry.
Mr. Chang also stated that this year marks the first collaboration between Taiwan and a professional institution under the government of Catalonia in Spain. Through this joint exhibition, the aim is to establish a long-term partnership with professional film institutions in Spain and continue to promote Taiwanese cinema in the future.
