Residents are in disbelief at the flooded streets in Tainan on Thursday night after torrential rain poured down on the southern city.

The Xiaodong underpass in the East District looks like a canal, with water levels reaching 1.7 meters, leaving the height indicator sign on the side of the elevated road almost completely submerged.

Drivers and motorcyclists found themselves stranded as their vehicles stalled and they were forced to resort to pushing their motorcycles through the torrents. Bus drivers continued to navigate through the gushing water but had to reduce their speed.

Tainan’s Annan District was hit the hardest this time, and frustrated residents flooded Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che's (黃偉哲) Facebook page pleading for a “flood day” off. Unfortunately for the locals, the mayor said that the city needs to follow the standards set by the central government and he could not just call a flood day without following protocols.

For now though, the deluge has subsided, but Tainan citizens are left hoping the heavy rains don’t hit again anytime soon.
