A Japanese lawmaker and an academic research group will come to Taiwan next week, according to an announcement by the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association on Thursday.

The association says Atsushi Oshima (大島敦), a senior member of the opposition Democratic Party for the People of Japan, is scheduled to visit Taiwan from September 10 to 14. They add that the purpose of Oshima’s visit is to understand the development of Taiwan's semiconductor industry. He will also meet with relevant groups in Taiwan to exchange views on how to promote economic, trade, and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Japan.

Additionally, the association says a group of cross-strait relations scholars from the University of Tokyo will also soon arrive for a four-day visit. The association says that the group of 10 researchers, led by Professor Yasuhiro Matsuda, is the only interdisciplinary research team in Japanese academia focusing exclusively on Taiwan.

The group is scheduled to meet with Taiwanese officials including foreign minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), Secretary General of the National Security Council Wellington Koo (顧立雄), and chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation David Lee (李大維).

The association says that plans are in the works to receive a large delegation of Japanese lawmakers during Taiwan’s national day on October 10. They add that plans have not yet been finalized, and further announcements will be forthcoming.
