The Michelin Guide Taiwan 2023 was released at a ceremony in Taipei on Thursday. The line-up for this year showed 44 Michelin starred restaurants in comparison to only 38 from in 2022.
During the ceremony, Michelin Guide International Director Gwendal Poullennec announced the awarding of three Michelin stars to Taïrroir and JL Studio restaurants. The last time that a Taiwanese restaurant received a 3-star rating was in 2018.
Taipei-based Taïrroir serves Taiwanese contemporary cuisine while Taichung-based JL Studio showcases Singaporean cuisine. Poullennec said this was also the first time globally that Singaporean and Taiwanese cuisines were featured by a 3-star Michelin restaurant.
The Michelin Guide lists the best restaurants based on a one to three star rating with three stars signifying that the restaurant offers exceptional cuisine. There are a total of 321 establishments listed in this year’s Michelin Guide Taiwan, which breaks down to 148 in Taipei, 64 in Taichung, 56 in Tainan, and 53 in Kaohsiung.
