The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy Director General and Spokesperson Tseng Shu-huai (曾淑慧) said on Monday that the number of dengue fever cases has increased by 833 last week, which is 60.5% more than the previous week on Monday. The CDC has demanded all schools to eliminate the breeding sources of dengue fever mosquitoes to prevent spread of the disease.
Tseng added that a total of 2,859 local cases have been reported nationwide by August, which ranked the second highest compared to the past 10 years. The statistic is only slightly lower than that of 2015.
Tseng continued to explain that the frequent rainfalls in some regions of Taiwan and the approaching typhoon have made the environment more suitable for dengue fever mosquitoes to multiply recently. The situation will possibly cause higher risks for transmission.
Tseng also said that disease prevention requires efforts from different parts of the society and urged the public to put on mosquito repellant and take protective measures when visiting mountainous areas.
