President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) congratulated Guatemalan president-elect Bernardo Arévalo de León on his success in winning the country’s presidential election, according to Monday’s news release by the Presidential Office.

Tsai said that Taiwan looks forward to deepening cooperation and strengthening diplomatic ties with Guatemala in the future. She wishes Guatemala continued prosperity under the governance of Arévalo.

In the news release, the Presidential Office Spokesperson Olivia Lin (林聿嬋) said that Guatemala has always been a staunch friend and ally of Taiwan. The country has spoken up for Taiwan at many international venues, expressing support for Taiwan’s participation.

The foreign ministry Spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) said on Tuesday that Arévalo has pledged his support to maintain diplomatic relations between Guatemala and Taiwan. The Taiwanese government will work closely with the new government of Guatemala and build on the existing foundation to increase exchanges for the mutual benefit of both sides.

Lin expects that a delegation will be sent to participate at the upcoming presidential inauguration ceremony.
