A popular beach and diving area in Keelung was the site of three tragic drownings last week. The government has now reopened the area but is imposing safety restrictions for visitors.

Divers suit up for a session early in the morning. It’s their first chance to dive here at Chaojing Park in Keelung following its weeklong closure. The area was closed after three people drowned in a single day at the nearby Dawulun Beach last week. A strong rip tide seems to be the cause of the tragic drownings, but these divers are glad to be back, with one saying that it's been a pity being unable to come and dive.
The government has brought in three rescue boats each with three lifeguards to patrol the area today. Extra buoys have also been deployed to mark the safety area set by the government. Swimming past the area could result in a fine between NT$10,000 and NT$50,000 (US$330-1,600). The government says the rescue boats are not only for safety but also to remind swimmers that passing the safety zone is illegal.
Both Dawulun Beach and Chaojing Park now have restricted daily hours of operation, closing at 6:00PM. So if you plan to come here, be sure to be safe and plan ahead.
