Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) on Tuesday met with a delegation of United Nations representatives to Geneva hailing from several of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies. The seven-member delegation is visiting Taiwan from August 14 to 19 at the invitation of the government.

In a speech, Wu says that Taiwan has been excluded from the UN for many years and faces an unfair international situation. He thanked the permanent representatives of Eswatini, the Marshall Islands, Guatemala, and Nauru for their continued support for Taiwan’s participation at the UN. He reiterated that Taiwan has the capacity to contribute meaningfully as a responsible member of the international community.

Eswatini representative Vuyile Dumisani Dlamini emphasized in his speech that Taiwan is a friend of the world and will staunchly continue to support Taiwan. Guatemalan representative Ángela María Chávez Bietti also said that Taiwan is a true friend. She said that Taiwan’s exclusion from participation at the UN is unfair and that the world needs Taiwan.

Other members of the visiting delegation include Nauruan Representative Chitra Talatoka Jeremiah and Representative from the Republic of the Marshall Islands Doreen de Brum.

The foreign ministry says the six-day trip provides opportunities for the group to learn more about Taiwan, and for Taiwan to learn more about operations at the UN.
