Sanitary concerns are the main reason why the majority of Taiwanese haven't used store-provided reusable cup rental services. That’s according to a survey released by Greenpeace on Tuesday, which showed that 70% of respondents have not utilized the service.

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) mandated having reusable cup rental services at convenience store chains and fast-food restaurants at the start of the year. At least 5% of stores were required to provide this service to promote sustainability and cut back on disposable cup use.

A survey conducted by Greenpeace to review the adoption of the services showed that more than 90% of respondents were aware of the policy and 85% were in favor. However, only around 30% of respondents have participated. Respondents stated two main reasons for not using the service. 70% of people said they did not use the service because of sanitary concerns and 20% stated a lack of incentive given that there was no price difference between the reusable and disposable drink cups.

Greenpeace appealed to the EPA to strengthen the cleanliness of reusable cups and actively conduct random inspections. Results of the inspections should be made public to increase the utilization of the service and reduce any doubts.
