The Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced on Wednesday that an army major is the latest suspect in a case involving Taiwan military personnel spying for China.

The Prosecutors Office announced on July 31 that six people have been indicted including an airforce lieutenant colonel from the 601st brigade, also known as the “Dragon City Unit.” The 601st is considered especially critical given its mission to defend Taipei City and northern Taiwan.

The new suspect named Wednesday is an army major from the Huadong Defense Command in eastern Taiwan. The MND says they are working with prosecutors on the case and are committed to ensuring the safety and security of the armed forces.

The case is the latest in a long string of recent espionage cases involving current and former members of the Taiwanese military suspected of espionage on behalf of the Chinese government. On Tuesday, prosecutors in Tainan indicted five people for such charges, including two military officers suspected of passing on secrets related to the recent Han Kuang exercises to China.
