President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) attended the opening ceremony of the Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX) in Kaohsiung on Monday.
In her remarks, Tsai said the establishment of the TCX will help Taiwan keep up with the pace of international society in climate transitions and further build collaborations with similar institutions in other parts of the world. She continued that it will also function to boost the research and development of low-carbon technologies and the cultivation of talents in related fields.
Tsai then explained that low carbon emission has become a requirement for the supply chain in international trade since the EU enforcement of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). She said that the Taiwanese government has also made corresponding legislations and built state plans to assist local enterprises in combating the challenges of industrial transformation.
Tsai emphasized that she believes the TCX will play a part in providing momentum for Taiwan to achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. She said that the implementation of carbon credit trading will provide incentives for the development of a green economy, stimulate business opportunities, and create more jobs in the future.
