US expected to announce US$330 million in military assistance to Taiwan: Reuters

The United States is expected to announce a military aid package worth approximately US$330 million (NT$10.36 billion) to Taiwan, according to a Reuters report published Friday.

The announcement could come as early as Friday, two U.S. officials told Reuters. The White House declined to comment.

The announcement is not expected to include a list of specific weapons that will be provided. Sources in recent weeks have said the package might include four unarmed MQ-9A Reaper drones. The sources noted however that the inclusion of the drones may fall through, as they carry some advanced equipment only available to the U.S. Air Force, which would need to be removed.

Taiwan has previously agreed to purchase four General Atomics MQ-9B Sea Guardian surveillance drones, with deliveries expected in 2025.

The U.S. Congress last year authorized the use of the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) in the 2023 budget to provide up to US$1 billion in arms aid to Taiwan.

The PDA can be used to speed up the delivery of security aid during crises. A recent example is the provision of military aid to Ukraine. However, the PDA for Taiwan aid is a non-emergency authority.
