On Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it will establish a Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in Mumbai, India, to deepen exchanges and enhance substantive ties between the two countries.

The TECC Mumbai will work with the existing offices in New Delhi and Chennai to further advance cooperation and provide better services for Taiwanese nationals in India.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that since establishing an office in Chennai in 2012, nearly 60% of Taiwanese businesses have invested and set up factories in the Southern part of the country. A similar effect is expected in Western India following the opening of the new office.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Mumbai is the largest city and the financial center of India. It also is the location of the largest port in the country. Many countries including the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Australia have established consulates in Mumbai. The Ministry says the TECC in Mumbai will help to expand mutually beneficial trade and investment between the two countries and promote cultural, educational, and technological exchanges between Taiwan and Western India.

The center will serve four nearby states including Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and the Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu Federal Territory. It will provide emergency assistance, visa, and document certification services to Taiwanese nationals, businesspeople, and tourists.
