U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken kicked off meetings with Chinese officials in Beijing on Sunday and met with Xi Jinping (習近平) the day after. The meetings signal attempts to decrease tensions from both sides.
In response to the meeting, Taiwan’s Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) says that Taiwan and US relations will not be affected by the visit while attending an event on Tuesday. Cheng emphasized that the Taiwan-US partnership on weapons acquisition and economic collaboration remains strong and on track. Cheng adds that the overwhelming support from the U.S. Congress on the recent trade agreement is also an indication for closer economic and trade cooperation with the US in the future.
The Foreign ministry also says Taiwan and the United States have great communication channels that foster mutual trust and the U.S. has always supported Taiwan’s stance on maintaining peace and security.
