For years, the Taiwan Railway Administration has offered bento boxes to train travelers. The traditional pork-chop bento, priced at NT$60 (US$2), has always been a top favorite and typically sells out before noon. However, customers have recently noticed that the fried tofu skin is missing from this popular bento box.
A netizen recently posted a picture of their train bentos from Nangang station, expressing disappointment over the missing fried tofu skin, a traditional side dish that has almost always been a part of train bentos.
Amidst the uproar from travelers and bento enthusiasts over the altered bento menu with claims that the missing fried tofu skin is the essence of train bentos, some individuals are even threatening to boycott train bentos until the Taiwan Train Administration reintroduces the side dish in its pork-chop bento. However, there are others who state that the absence of fried tofu skin would not impact their meal selection.
When asked about whether it would consider bringing back the fried tofu skin, the Taiwan Train Administration explains that their kitchen periodically modifies the selection of side dishes, clarifying that this is not the first instance of fried tofu skin being replaced. The Train Administration also says they will take customer feedback into consideration.
