The "Expanded Overstayers Voluntary Departure Program" has entered the countdown stage. The National Immigration Agency is reminding overstaying foreign nationals to report in before June 30 to enjoy the program’s minimum penalties. These include exemption from detention, a minimum fine of NT$2,000, and no prohibition from reentering Taiwan.
On May 30 this year, an amendment to the Law on Entry, Exit, and Immigration was passed that increases the fine for overstay. The current range of up to NT$10,000 is now up to NT$50,000. In addition, the ban on reentering Taiwan has been extended from a maximum of 3 years to a maximum of 7 years.
The immigration agency is encouraging overstaying foreigners to turn themselves in before the program ends to avoid heftier penalties. Overstayers will be assisted with the administrative process so they can return to their home country and reunite with their families as soon as possible. The public can call 0800-024-881 or contact the Immigration Agency for more information.
