The upgraded Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung is being enjoyed by many citizens following its US$18 million renovations. However, the Kaohsiung City Government is wanting to increase ticket prices accordingly.

Citizens have been enjoying the newly renovated Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung following its re-opening in December 2022.  The renovations, which cost US$18 million, include a new 440 meter open air walkway.

One citizen says the renovations means she can now see the animals much more clearly and be closer to them. Another citizen says both the walkways and facilities have improved.

However, Kaohsiung City Councilor Ho Chuan-feng says that the price for admission to the zoo should increase accordingly. Deputy Mayor Lo Ta-sheng adds that admission for the Shoushan Zoo is still the cheapest in Taiwan and an adjustment of the ticket price would be the correct thing to do.

For non-city residents of Taipei City, a regular admission ticket for Taipei Zoo is NT$100 (US$3.20). Full price admission ticket for Hsinchu Zoo is NT$50. In comparison, the equivalent for Kaohsiung’s Shoushan Zoo is NT$40.

But how would visitors feel about an increase in ticket prices? One citizen says NT$50 is just about right. Another citizen says he would be willing to pay NT$50-60 for admission.

While the Kaohsiung City Government says admission prices to the zoo are likely to increase, the amount they will be increased by will need to be discussed with city residents.
