Taiwan is looking to partner with the United States in the semiconductor industry. Economic Minister Wang Mei-hua said on Thursday that Taiwan's goal is to secure an investment deal with the US that is worth NT$30 billion (US$938 million).

Last week, the US expanded its restrictions on exporting certain semiconductors to China. Minister Wang says this ban is not aimed at consumer electronics, but rather chips used in AI and high-performance computing.

Wang says Taiwan's semiconductor industry will be able to find markets outside of China to sell its chips, so further restrictions should not have a major impact on Taiwan's economy.

In regards to the US-China chip war, Wang says Taiwan is a professional semiconductor manufacturer that sells its chips to the integrated circuit design industry. Wang says chip manufacturers are not involved in deciding where designers sell the finished products afterwards.

The Economic Ministry says Taiwan is also collaborating with the US in the fields of carbon reduction and 5G communication. It says the Taiwan Power Company is working with US company General Electric to reach Taiwan's net-zero carbon emission goal by 2050.
